Soroptimist International is a global volunteer service organization. "Soroptimist" is a coined word, combining the Latin words soror "sister" and optima "best," meaning "best for women." The Ashland club formed on June 12, 1946 and is celebrating its 80th anniversary. Soroptimist International ofAshland (SIA) distributes between $25,000 and $50,000 in scholarships, grants and awards to girls and women in our community annually. I prefer to stay in the city because I was born in a highly urbanized country. Ashland is my first exposure to nature. There is a fireroad in Lithia Park that allows you to either drive or walk. If you have the patience to get up there, and you look at the cityscape alongside its beautiful rustic surroundings, then you understand how humans can be great managers of the world. The change I have gone through throughout my time living here is portrayed in the physical metamorphosis of myself. Despite everything, I am still myself, and my heart has remained my own. I spent most of my life as an artist, and I have been drawing people for as long as I can remember. Including small, cartoonish versions of myself, contrasting my arrival in Ashland and who I am now, allowed me to add this important aspect of who I am in the medium I chose. Ashland itself is portrayed in more ambiguous watercolors, with specific locations shaped and colored in a way that represents how I feel when I think of these places. I used to come when I was young to white-water raft. And now having chosen Southern Oregon University to pursue my degree, I am overjoyed to experience all the seasons. And who am I? To some, I am an artist, a musician. I am a student in some eyes, and a teacher to others. To many, I am a passing cyclist. These versions of me have either grown out of, or still exist in Ashland, Oregon; this map is a representation of the person that this place has created. This map represents the important pillars of my upbringing and life, using elements of collage, ink, words, and stickers. It serves as a reminder of what I value in my life and how growing up in Ashland has shaped these. When choosing what I wanted to add, I deliberately set the intention not to have pre-conceived notions of what I would look for in the art materials. I think this can get to something deeper and more intuitive; it allows me to follow what comes up. Through this process, my findings revealed familiar themes - community, outdoors, music, and family. I intentionally did not name specific memories, but instead opted to keep it somewhat vague. There are simply too many memories to count in Lithia park - far too many hikes taken, fiddle camps taught, picnics eaten, summer swims swam… the list goes on. As you view this, I encourage you to reflect on your own home town and within that, the places that have chiseled away at your sense of self and revealed your own values and pillars of identity. I ask through this process, “What makes you light up? Where do you feel like you are making a difference? Where do you feel a sense of belonging? I added in my joyful memories here at Ashland, some of which unfortunately fell off. This is my fairytale in map form. I made a map of Ashland using watercolors with the idea of creating a fantastical world. I learned how to use watercolors from my sister, which brought us closer and brought me back to when I was younger and would craft. I took inspiration from the old-style map hanging above my bed in my room, with old-looking paper and sea monsters. The ethereal mood is propelled by the blending of the colors, and I feel whisked away into a softer world. This map gives me hope and a sense of calm and adventure. This map is like the worlds of the books I read. The map holds space for magic and creativity that we can take with us in all aspects of our lives. Grants Pass, OR. Woman. English major and Honors College scholar with certificates in Foundations of Teaching English Language Arts and Literary Studies. With oil pastels, jewel stickers, washi tape, metallic pens, and my subtle secret weapon—a light dusting of glitter—I aimed to capture the essence of Ashland as its own galaxy. To me, Ashland is a unique corner of the world, a standout spot among the stars. Therefore, I chose to interpret Ashland as a galaxy focused through the viewpoint of my own experiences. This map of Ashland combines the concepts of familiarity and the unknown. The contrasts of warm and cold colors represent this clash, while also drawing one into the mystery of the galaxy’s center. Each jewel is tied to a special place on my journey through the Ashland cosmos. The metallic washi tape line that cuts through the swirling colors serves as both a path towards new horizons and a road that leads back to home. By doing so, it depicts an ongoing journey of self-discovery through place. I am a pretty routine person who regularly does the same things in the same places. I think this shows in the way I drew my map: there are a lot of gaps of unfilled space, but the activities I drew are more detailed. I included Southern Oregon University, which had to be a staple in my map because college was my purpose for coming to Ashland, and I’ve spent a lot of time on campus. I also included the yoga studio I go to; I’m often there multiple times per week. It's been an important outlet when I’m overwhelmed, has given me a sense of belonging in the community outside of the university, and has been a mode of pain management for my chronic illness. Aside from college and the yoga studio, my map mostly includes outdoor activities. Nature is what I love the most about Ashland, and I spend a lot of my free time outside hiking my favorite local trails or paddleboarding at Emigrant Lake. These places are important to me because they’ve been constants in my life on my journey growing up and discovering who I am as a young adult in my first few years living on my own. As someone born and raised in Ashland, it has always felt like a bubble separate from the rest of the world. This perception of the city as a sanctuary distinct from the chaos of its surroundings influenced me to create a wild collage encompassing it, always staying in the periphery. My passion is biology, so I was drawn to images of diverse landscapes, plants, animals, and the natural world. I cut them out of magazines, travel pamphlets, and sticker books, putting them together in beautiful pandemonium. Inside city limits, a gradient of rainbow colors and silver streets depicts the refuge Ashland is for me. Stars dot the map in silver, each representing a memory, experience, or value gained in those places. There were many more I could have added, but it felt right to keep the city uncluttered and let the most substantial ones shine through. Also, I have always been interested in science and nature. I made a detailed map representing the vegetation and how it changes around Ashland. I highlighted how it’s centered around the water throughout the area. To note, I hope viewers recognize the significance of the tools I utilized. This included multicolor pastels to show how everything blends and connects, and markers to draw the important features and to outline the water that supports everything. I chose to focus on the landscape in Ashland because when I arrived for college, I immediately noticed how diverse it was when compared to where I lived. This experience isn’t unique either, so I wanted to present what most people first notice when they arrive. In this way, the work explores what people physically see but often undervalue. Coming from a rural background, I often focus on physical ideas and items. Combining this with the fact that I am studying Environmental Science and Policy, I am comfortable analyzing nature. When I moved home, it was under unfortunate circumstances. This map rendition is a multi-media work with focused collage spaces dedicated to my frequented areas around town following my return. As I created my map, I grew increasingly frustrated. I felt as though I left my artistic passions behind and threw myself entirely into my education following my return to Ashland, which felt like the opposite of my peers' experiences. My color choice across mediums intends to capture the two main landscape distinctions I see: forest and farmland. The jagged, uneven work represents for me a cognitive battle between sweet nostalgia and feeling “not quite right” presently. Despite my frustrations with the work, I chose not to revise.
